"Friend of all, ally of none". This is the way someone could define this Spanish Heroe, the Marquis of Villalobar, Spanish Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium during the great war.

Other referred to him as "benefactor of the victims of war" or "protector of the Belgians", but other simply referred to him as "THE GUARDIAN ANGEL THAT FLEW OVER BELGIUM".

When war broke out in 1914, Rodrigo de Saavedra y Vinent was preparing to watch the continental drama peacefully from a neutral country like Belgium, without suspecting that in just few weeks later Belgium would be attacked with ferocity. While the Belgian government had to leave Brussels and with it the entire foreign diplomatic corps, Villalobar and his American colleague, Brand Whitlock, decided to stay in Brussels, where they both played the role of defenders of the victims of the war. And when the United States entered the war, the Spanish representative was left alone, safeguarding the helpless for which at the end of the war he was declared an honorary citizen of Belgium and of not a few cities in the United States.

Find more and discover the true and surprising story behind thanks to Doña Isabel de Saavedra, granddaughter of the Marquids of Villalobar, who will reveal interesting and unknown details of the life of this Spanish angel.
