The greatest ecstasy that a lover of the black legend can have is the figure of Charles II, known as the "Bewitched". This king is frequently used as a paradigm of the decadence from which the haters of the Spanish Empire and of Hispanity draw their energy.
However, and contrary to what the lovers of the black legend say, the reign of Charles II was not a disaster for the Spanish Empire. At the end of the 17th century, Spanish America was not yet in the throes of the crisis and dring this time important political changes were carried out by Carlos II in one of the most powerful kingdoms of his patrimony: Peru. Indeed, Hispanic America was a forerunner in the reforms of the viceroyal courts, which in turn reshaped the paradigm of government and interaction of the distant kingdoms. From then on, the Hispanic Monarchy shifted its interests towards America, in a reorganisation of its territories that led it not only to fight for its resilience, but also to strengthen its leading role in the international politics it had inherited from the Bourbon dynasty.
Mr JuanJimenez castillo, from the Ctholic univerity of Louvain willpresent us with a very interesting views of the reign of Charless II of Spain and rather different story from the one officially established that will leave no one indifferent.
