For whom does the economy keep growing, and at whose expense? What is the real price that people and the planet pay for endless economic expansion? And what if the climate crisis is not only an environmental issue, but also a story of exploitation, inequality and power? What could an economy look like if it centred democracy, justice and wellbeing rather than profit?
In the documentary The Cost of Growth, Belgian climate and human rights activist Anuna De Wever and Dutch researcher Lena Hartog travel across Europe in search of answers to these questions. They speak with grassroots movements in Italy, Serbia and Sápmi, and meet leading thinkers such as Greta Thunberg, Vijay Prashad and Jason Hickel.
The film connects local resistance against extractivism with broader debates on climate justice, democracy and the future of Europe’s economic model.
On 15 December 2025, the European Climate Pact and Impact Hub at Plein Publiek Brussels host a special screening of The Cost of Growth. After the film, Anuna De Wever will join us on stage for a live discussion with invited guests, exploring the themes of the documentary through different perspectives: from youth activism to EU policy and new economic thinking.
Doors open at 18h30 - movie starts at 19h.
This event is exclusively hosted by European Climate Pact and Impact Hub.
