LEGO build: adding the eco-roof to the Menin Gate
Overzicht
In the heart of Ieper’s visitor centre stands a truly unique tribute: the LEGO Menin Gate, built in 2014 by Jan Vanden Berghe using 54,000 LEGO bricks—one for every name commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial. For years, this incredible model has captured the imagination of visitors from around the world.
But just like the real Menin Gate, our LEGO model is evolving.
Earlier this year, the Menin Gate restoration was completed, and with it came an innovative addition: a green eco-roof. Planted with sedum and herbaceous plants, this roof does more than look good—it’s great for the environment. It protects the monument’s structure from UV rays, extends its lifespan, and helps retain rainwater, reducing runoff into the sewer system. It’s a sustainable solution for the future.
Now, it’s time for the LEGO Menin Gate to follow suit!
We’re giving our iconic model its very own miniature green roof, staying true to reality and showcasing the importance of sustainability—even in the smallest details.
Come and witness this transformation for yourself. See how history and innovation come together, brick by brick, in a model that tells a story of remembrance and progress.
