The Agile Learning Experience - Abby Oulton + Rubén Darío - April 6th


Abby is a learning facilitator for youth, adults, and teams...and an incurably curious learner myself. She works with Agile Learning Centers, based out of the flagship center in New York City, and consults with other creative organizations. Her website is abbyoulton.wordpress.com.

Rubén Darío belongs to the founding wave of the Agile Learning Centers, and today he holds compassionate spaces for true expression, in diverse formats, and continues seeding contexts and infrastructures for compassion, play and Love, in order to facilitate transitions from separation to Unity in the Self-Directed Education Universe.

They will be co-hosting The Agile Learning Experience, a conversation about the foundations of ALCs, in their understanding and experience, and what they have noticed facilitating in them and in parallel spaces for the past 11 years.

Science of self-direction - Gaby Portilla - April 18th


Mother, entrepreneur, highly sensitive and intuitive. Passionate about life and facilitating transformation processes. Founder of Family Sensitive and Dog Sensitive, two projects dedicated to raising awareness and changing the way we relate as families that include children and dogs. She facilitates discovery processes for highly sensitive individuals geared towards conscious parenting, untraining and removing conditioning practices from our families' DNA.


She developed a practice called "mirroring therapy" where she helps people find the blind spots in the family dynamics and/or personal emotional issues, through the observation of their children's and/or dogs' behavior. She’s been working for over 15 years with families to improve family dynamics, and heal humanity from the inside out.


The Science behind Self-Directed Education: Gaby Portilla shares her experience researching, as a mom and a facilitator, the intersection between freedom, education and the nervous system.

One of the most potent transformative practices she knows is relating to tension as a generative force, a gift from her experiences in parenting, worldschooling, community living, intimate partnership and every facet of her life. She’s sharing her experiences with learning in community, and the incredible abundance that has emerged from creating community within a gift ecology, and the value she has found in learning to relate to tension as a creative force.

Creativity and self-directed education - Katherine - June 13th

Katherine is an Associate Professor of Sociology at The City College of New York and Graduate Center, CUNY. She researches the design and behavior of decentralized and community-based organizations. In this session we'll refer to her work on Burning Man, "Enabling Creative Chaos," and her work with the Agile Learning Center of New York City, "Learning how to be a scyborg: How prefigurative organisations can promote capacity to decolonialise organisations."


Abby Oulton will be interviewing Katherine Chen about the theme in her research of designing for change by supporting creativity, agility, and ongoing learning.

Education with life at the center - Marco + Kari - June 27th

Marco (@MakariosAnand) and Karina (@Karina185) live in Ecuador with Nico and Luana. They share their lives with them, exploring the path of constant unlearning to embrace a REexistence in harmony, where we can all flourish. They are founders of @ElNidoCasaAbierta and actively articulate the National Network of Alternatives @MushukAwayEcuador. They are also related to planetary networks such as the @EcoversitiesAlliance and the Global Tapestry of Alternatives (GTA).


"Education with Life at The Center" is an exploration of 6 dimensions of wisdom that mature cultures have considered vital in their flourishing and plenitude. They will share some stories and experiences on how this compass has been proposed as a Self-Directed exploration Map to navigate learning/un-learning journeys with youth generations and why it is important to incorporate those different dimensions in order to thrive in harmony with the Hole Web of Life.
