LAMENT FOR A BURNT FOREST
A 25-minute spatial sound installation created for five speakers and presented as part of the sound festival La Semaine du SONOOR.
Answering a call for collective grief in a society where loss is often processed individually and in silence, the artists created an immersive sound piece that serves as a contemporary mourning ritual. The composition evolved out of recordings made in Athens with a group of female vocalists, following a visit to the burnt forests in the mountains surrounding the city. Transforming the grief that took shape in their body, the performers explored their voices in unsettling ways: quivering, rustling, humming, screaming, breaking. Through sound manipulation and digital processing, new textures and polyphonic structures emerged, forming a swarming sonic mass.
