Jonathan Bauer is a trumpeter, vocalist and composer originally from Northern Alberta, now deeply rooted in New Orleans. As a core member of the Grammy-winning New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, he’s made his name as one of the most distinct voices on the scene, not just for his warm, buttery tone, but for the way he leads from the front.

His new album Sings and Plays showcases that double threat: vocals that echo the cool of Chet Baker, and trumpet lines steeped in the bop-and-swing tradition of Roy Hargrove and Lester Young.

Recorded in New Orleans just before the pandemic hit, Sings and Plays features standout takes on jazz standards like Exactly Like You, Just Friends, and Doodlin’. The band — tight, rhythmic, and refreshingly unpolished, includes some of the city’s most swinging players. Jazz critic Jonathan Woolf calls it “clever, taut, and bluesy,” with arrangements that “swing and bite.”

This isn’t throwback jazz. It’s forward-facing, straight from the hip , with rhythm, edge, and a whole lot of heart.
