ISABEL CLARA EUGENIA, FAVORITE OF THE KING, GOVERNOR OF FLANDERS
Isabel was one of the most important woman of the 17th century in Europe who remains largely unknown.
The rebellion of the Netherlands against Philip II was the greatest challenge of his reign, leading to the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648). To pacify those territories, the king gave his daughter Isabel Clara Eugenia (1566-1633) as a dowry to Archduke Albert, to whom she was betrothed. The Infanta, who was first the sovereign of the Netherlands and later the governor of Flanders, achieved what seemed impossible: stabilizing the territories under her command. With a shrewd combination of diplomacy, religious fervor, and a remarkable cultural impetus, Isabel Clara Eugenia established herself as one of the most powerful and influential women of 17th century Europe. She was a devout Catholic and a prominent patron of the arts, under whose sponsorship the court of Brussels reached unparalleled splendor.
Mr Enrique Martinez will be coming from Madrid to present us with a very interesting views and rather different story from the one officially established that will leave no one indifferent.
