Join us for an unique evening with Baloji of Extra Academy lectures at Stadsform!
Extra Academy is a collaboration between the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, Sint Lucas Antwerp and Royal conservatory of Antwerp. They organize an open program of lectures, performances, workshops and screenings around artistic practices, reflection and research. Since September 2024 they hold there monthly meetings at Stadsform. The program is in English and open for non students also.
dear all,our next Extra Academy session will take place on Thursday January 29th at 7PM at Stadsform, with invited guest artist: BALOJI
BALOJI is a polymath artist, filmmaker, and poet born in Lubumbashi (DR Congo) and based in Belgium. His name, which originally means “man of science” in Swahili, shifted under colonial rule to signify “sorcerer.” This duality — between knowledge and the mystical — permeates his work, marked by a singular sensitivity to dreamlike worlds and magical realism.
After several acclaimed short films — including Zombies (Grand Prize, Oberhausen Short Film Festival 2019); MUBI (Short Film of the Year 2020) — Baloji directed his debut feature, Augure (2023). The film premiered in Cannes’ Official Selection, winning the New Vision Award, and was chosen as Belgium’s official submission for the Oscars.
Baloji is now developing his second feature, Mulâtresse Solitude, which has already secured Francophone production support (shooting planned for 2026). Around the film, he is building a wider creative ecosystem: a musical soundtrack and concert series (in partnership with Universal France), a short film exploring satellite characters (presented as an exhibition at Bozar, Brussels, and HKW, Berlin), and an augmented reality experience accompanying the theatrical release.
Parallel to his filmmaking, Baloji has released three gold-certified albums, including Avenue Kaniama (Bella Union). His four-part soundtrack for Augure — 34 songs written from the perspectives of the film’s characters — inspired a touring exhibition that showcased his costume design, photography, and artistic direction (Fashion Museum Antwerp, MAAT Lisbon, ICA London).
In recognition of his boundary-breaking practice, Baloji has been named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres and has received numerous international awards, celebrating the radical interdisciplinarity of his work.
