About this event

The trainings will be held in English and take place in the Blue Guide EMC Lab, we're able to host the trainings online if needed. We also host the same session in Goes, The Netherlands, in December.

Who?

Andy Degraeve (IEEE member, EMC Test Labs Association (EMCTLA) member), was born in Ghent, Belgium, on June 6, 1980. He received the M.S. degree in electronics and computer engineering from the KU Leuven, Technology Campus Ostend, Belgium, in 2014.

Training program

The trainings are a general introductory course based on practice-oriented research. The handouts of the course are made available as course material. You can also expect practical tests during the trainings.

The physical basis of SI, PI and EMC (Erpe-Mere 16/09/25 or Goes 03/12/25)

This course module is effectively “Maxwells Equations without maths”. It helps ordinary engineers who don’t want to be EMC specialists to visualise EMC. Helping them to understand the practical design techniques described in the remainder course modules and help to understand them how to adapt these successfully if or when necessary.

We start with electromagnetic fields and waves, cover the return current path. Including some field theory, properties of material(s), near- and far-field, different types of analysis, waveforms and spectra, EMC issues and types of coupling, ‘earth’, ‘ground’, ‘chassis’ connections, interference mechanisms, RF immunity and more.

Duration: 4h

Good EMC Engineering practices for equipment, systems and installations(Erpe-Mere 17/09/25 or Goes 04/12/25)

This course covers good electromagnetic engineering, and how to do it in a cost-effective manner. The techniques covered in this course are well-proven to save time and money in all lifecycle stages helping to increase profits and reduce time-to-market.

Starting with an introduction to the EMC Directive and wiring regulations, we continue with planning strategies, dealing with legacy equipment, COTS components, power distribution for EMC, galvanic isolation, EM zoning, bonding ring conductors, … techniques for reducing the ‘accidental RF antenna effects’, different EM mitigation techniques, how to maintain a good EMC over the full operational lifecycle including a very useful list of good references.

Duration: 8h

Essential PCB design/layout techniques for cost-effective SI, PI and EMC in 2025(Erpe-Mere 18/09/25 or Goes 05/12/25)

This course covers good electromagnetic design and layout engineer practices to achieve good SI, PI and EMC in 2025 in a cost-effective manner. These design and layout guidelines are well-proven in real-life to save time and money overall in design and development, and help to increase profits and reduce financial risks, for everything, of any size, in all applications.

We cover amongst other topics how to save time and money, circuit segregation, interface analysis, filtering and suppression, 0V ‘ground’ and PWR ‘power’ planes, RF-bonding, power supply decoupling, switching converters, matched transmission line techniques, layer stacking for good EMC, BGA devices, multiple DC rails, including a very useful list of references.

Guidelines are for compliance with IEC 61000-6-1 and IEC 61000-6-3. The module The physical basis of SI, PI and EMC tells you how to adapt them to different EMC standards.

Duration: 8h.

Resume Andy Degraeve
