Concept-Based Language Inquiries for Additional Language Educators
Overview
This professional learning experience is a deep dive into concept-based inquiry framed within the context of additional languages. Participants will explore the principles of designing meaningful concept-based units of inquiry, and will become acquianted with approaches to teaching that can help to bring the model to fruition.
This workshop will support language educators to undestand concepts within the domains of grammar, processes (listening, reading, reading, writing, planning, collaborating), as well as strategies and skills. By focusing on intentional and explicit teaching, participants will realise how to articulate contextualised learning, to culminating performance experiences, metacognitive practices and critical thinking.
Participants will take part in the design of a unit of inquiry that will include relevant resources that will power the learning experiences.
This workshop is based on J. Rafael´'s book: From Inception to Fruition: Concept-Based Language Teaching and Learning, and includes the following sessions:
- The architecture of the concept-based model
- The articulation of context, language and summative experiences
- Concepts, metacognition and critical thinking
- The relationship between guiding questions, recources and learning experiences
- Concept-based inquiries related to input
- Concept-based inquiries related to output
- Launching units of inquiry and monitoring the construction of conceptual understanding
- Planning a unit of inquiry
Participants will receive
- A certificate of participation
- A copy of From Inception to Fruition: Concept-Based Language Teaching and Learning
- A toolbox that will support them to put elements of the model in practice right away.
