Conference Purpose


The Advanced ELENA course on "Refugee protection: from recognition to rejection " will take place on Friday December 7 and Saturday 8 December 2018. The Course will be held in Sana Malhoa Hotel in Lisbon, Portugal.

This year the Advanced ELENA Course will provide an engaging forum for over 100 legal practitioners, academics and decision makers to discuss, analyze and reflect upon the legal challenges related to international protection in Europe. The Course topics and sessions are related to the refugee regime - from recognition to denial of protection - and will cover subjects for the credibility of the protection of international law, the recognition of refugee status and subsidiary protection status. cessation of refugee status. The content of the course will also extend to family reunification of those with international protection status and the recent jurisprudence of the European courts in respect to asylum and refugee law. Finally, three workshops will give a chance to participate in the international protection regime and engage in fruitful discussions on the interplay between national security, anti-terrorism measures and refugee law; challenging cases related to economic and social rights of migrants; and litigating cases of asylum applicants with specific vulnerabilities.

The 2018 Advanced ELENA Course is honored to announce the participation of a number of distinguished speakers, including Eleanor Sharpston , Advocate-General at the CJEU; Mark O'Connor, Principal Resident Judge, UK Upper Tribunal, Immigration and Asylum Chamber; David Loveday , Independant legal practitioner; Geoff Gilbert , Lecturer at the University of Essex; S. Chelvan , Barrister at No5 Chambers and PhD at Law Candidate at King's College London; Kris Pollet , Head of Legal and Policy Research, ECRE; Massimo Frigo , Senior L egal Adviser, International Commission of Jurists and Christel Querton, Barrister at Lamb Building and PhD candidate at Law at Newcastle University.

Conference Fee


The Conference fee covers all relevant costs. Read 7th of December 2018. Please note that the fee does not apply. Saturday 8 December 2018.

The following fees apply:

  • 340 EUR - ELENA coordinators
  • 380 EUR - Lawyers and NGO staff
  • 460 EUR - Government officials and international organizations

To book your place, click on the green 'Register' button (at the top of your screen). Interested participants should register by Monday 15 October 2018 to secure a place. Given the limited places available, interested persons are recommended.

When registering for the course, you can choose the 2 workshops you wish to attend (one in the morning and one in the afternoon).

Sana Malhoa Hotel, where the course will take place, has a special price for participants.

100 EUR double room

Above rates are per room, per night and include breakfast buffet, taxes and service charges.
