Jan Jeroen Vranckx

Prof. Jan Jeroen Vranckx serves as Chief and Program Director of the dept. of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the KU-Leuven University Hospitals in Leuven, Belgium since 2008.

 

He trained in KU-Leuven (FCCP 2000) and performed fellowships ao. in the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan, Hospital Sao Joao, Oporto, Portugal and 2 years at Harvard’s Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, USA. He obtained the PhD-degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2007 on a thesis entitled ‘Smart Autologous Tissue Engineering by ex vivo gene transfer ’.

 

His clinical & research work resulted in more than 100 publications, proceedings and bookchapters about head and neck surgery, lower extremity reconstructions, abdomino-perineal surgery, breast surgery, fatgrafting and the twilight zone of tissue engineering and microsurgery.

Two papers in the  New England Journal of Medicine report the trachea allotransplantation series, the world’s first 8 trachea allotransplantations inducing ‘tolerance’ in a clinical setting.

 

This resulted in ’Best Paper Awards’ at the World Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery WSRM, twice at the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery ASRM, and twice at the European Association of Plastic Surgeons EURAPS. He became Fellow of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (FAAPS) in 2015. In 2016 he won the Hans Anderl Award from the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS) and he was awarded the Marko Godina Traveling Fellowship of the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM) resulting in the 24 Godina Memorial Lecture 2017 at the ASRM in HI,USA. 

Recently he was elected Secretary-General of EURAPS starting in Athens 2020.
