Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute
The Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute is a non-government organisation and registered charity.
OUR VISION
The effective and inclusive conservation of protected areas globally.
OUR MISSION
To promote understanding and stewardship of the GBMA through building and sharing knowledge, robust partnerships and community involvement.
WHY WE EXIST
The Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area of Australia is a precious and awe-inspiring natural and cultural landscape of over a million hectares. The exceptional biodiversity and ecosystems of the Blue Mountains provide clean air and water to the Greater Sydney region and a healthy escape into nature for over five million visitors a year.
Like most protected areas, the Blue Mountains region is threatened by climate change, extreme fires, development impacts, habitat degradation and species loss. We respond to these threats through research, sharing knowledge, awareness-raising and seeking practical solutions for a sustainable future.
OUR GOALS
- We catalyse action towards sustainable management and stewardship of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area through high impact research that builds understanding and appreciation of the region’s natural and cultural values.
- We engage with First Nations Peoples, and support a collaborative network of local partners and global leaders who champion the conservation of natural and cultural heritage.
- We build the capacity of our communities to embrace and contribute to sustainable management and conservation.
