A Right/Left Project
A Right/Left Project is the creative studio of British Artists Stephen Dobbie & Colin Nightingale
They create experiences that redefine how audiences engage with art, sound and space. Their work merges storytelling, spatial design, technology and composition to create transformative collective encounters exploring presence, perception and human connection.
As Associate Artists of the multi-award-winning theatre company Punchdrunk, they have been central to the development of contemporary immersive theatre since 2002. As part of the core creative team behind Sleep No More, experienced by more than two million people across London, Boston, New York, Shanghai and Seoul, they helped shape a new international language of free-roaming performance - one that repositioned audiences not as spectators, but as active participants moving through narrative worlds.
In 2019 they established A Right/Left Project to expand their independent artistic practice following the success of Beyond The Road with British DJ and musician James Lavelle (UNKLE), a large-scale multi-sensory installation merging visual art, music and film. The project premiered at Saatchi Gallery, London in 2019 before a six-month run at Alt 1 Gallery at The Hyundai Seoul in 2021, reaching audiences at significant scale in both the UK and South Korea.
Their practice extends across cultural festivals, public realm commissions and major international exhibitions. They designed the site and audio world for Peter Hudson’s monumental kinetic sculpture Charon at Greenwich & Docklands International Festival 2022. Stephen’s compositional work includes sound design for major exhibitions such as Forever-Valentino at M7, Doha and Swarovski’s Masters of Light at MoCA Shanghai, reflecting ongoing collaborations with leading cultural institutions and global brands.
Drawing on over two decades of experience designing complex, large-scale immersive environments, they are now focused on a distinctive body of deep-listening installations, including The Retiring Room, ORIGIN & sanctum.
