In-House Scholar
In-House Scholar is a community-centered literary platform founded by Dr. La-Toya Scott, an Assistant Professor of African American Literature and Culture and a public-facing scholar committed to making literary study accessible beyond the university.
With a background in Black literary studies, cultural theory, and digital ethnography, Dr. Scott’s work explores how Black communities use storytelling, literature, and collective care to survive, imagine, and build new futures. Through In-House Scholar, she brings those conversations into intimate, welcoming spaces—inviting readers and writers of all backgrounds to engage Black literature as something lived, felt, and shared.
In-House Scholar hosts writing workshops, literary gatherings, and community conversations that blend close reading, creative practice, and reflection. These events are designed for people who love words—whether they are seasoned writers, curious readers, educators, or community members seeking thoughtful space and connection.
At its core, In-House Scholar believes that literature is not only something we study, but something we gather around. Every event centers accessibility, care, and the power of Black stories to inform how we read, write, and understand ourselves and the world.
