Maternal Wellness Village
Welcome and join us for a cultural experience! We are hosting our 7th Annual Celebration of Black Maternal Health Week, we have partnered and collaborated with an amazing group to bring forth events that span statewide in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia’s Maternal Wellness Village (MWV), a program under the auspices of Oshun Family Center, is a transdisciplinary village of Black birth workers that include therapists, doulas, lactation consultants, holistic healers, infertility warriors, and nurses. Combined, we have multiple levels of education and life experiences, over 50 years of parenting skills, 35 years of lactation support, 25 years of providing labor support, and 10 years of mental health support. The mission of MWV is to function as an action-oriented task force by providing support services to empower communities throughout the African Diaspora. Through our efforts, we aim to increase modern adaptations of ancestral birth practices, reclaim the Black birth experience, and reduce Black maternal morbidity and mortality. We are also involved in a spectrum of city, state, and national initiatives and organizations. Since 2018, under the leadership of the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA), Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) takes place every April 11–17 and seeks “to amplify the voices of Black mamas and center the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements” and this year is no different!
