Why Labs?
Empowering citizens as drivers of innovation
Brussels, 15th April 2015
(12:30 – 17:00)
The European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities (EIP-SCC) brings together cities, industry and citizens to improve urban life through more sustainable integrated solutions. This includes applied innovation, better planning, a more participatory approach, higher energy efficiency, better transport solutions, intelligent use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
The multitude of challenges facing European cities directly impact the citizens who live there. Citizens are at times contributors to urban issues, through their behavior and demography. They are also a crucial component in solutions, offering immense aggregate power from their behavioral change, education, engagement, participation and empowerment.
The ‘Citizen Focus’ EIP SCC action cluster is about industries, civil society, and different layers of government working together with citizens to realize public interests at the intersection of ICT, mobility and energy in an urban environment. The cluster consists of initiatives across Europe working to ensure cities are inclusive of their citizens – enabling them to create and problem-solve and facilitating conversation between stakeholders, so citizens’ voices are not only heard, but instrumental in solution design.
In the context of the ‘Citizen Focus’ action cluster, the city of Barcelona (co-leader of this action cluster) and the European Network of Living Labs (www.openlivinglabs.eu), one of the most active networks empowering citizens as drivers of innovation in city ecosystems, co-organise the workshop called “Why Labs? Empowering citizens as drivers of innovation in Smart Cities”on April 15th in Brussels.
About the Workshop:
Objectives of the workshop:
- Bring together cities and city stakeholders that have developed and implemented actions to involve and empower citizens in city innovation projects and activities.
- Explore the role of Labs as tools for citizen engagement
- Bring best practices on how citizen engagement can be scaled and replicated in other cities
- Explore the City as a Living Lab approach
- Explore how cities are integrating citizen involvement and participation as part of their city policies
We put a special focus on the commitments that have been sent by Barcelona, although aim at generating a debate that integrates stakeholders from the private and public sector; as well as different government and organizational levels.
