Event description
This is a free, virtual, and cross-cultural after-school program that will inspire 100 girls to use STEM to solve an innovative challenge.

About this event

In a nutshell…

We are teaming up with the U.S. Embassy in Belgium to launch ‘The great passport to STEM challenge’. This is a free, virtual, and cross-cultural after-school program from January – June 2021 that encourages girls to be sustainable innovators . Our aim is to inspire 100 girls from different backgrounds to use Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to solve an innovative design challenge with a network of support from expert role-models and mentors in the fields.

This is a multilingual, international program and we invite any school in Belgium and the United States to apply for the challenge!

What is it about?

''What does a sustainable classroom look like? What would be the most valuable sustainable invention that any school needs in 2021? How can we connect with school across the globe in a sustainable way? '' These are just a few of the questions the organizers will ask the participants to resolve in the upcoming few months.

Why should you take part?

To help you in this challenge, we will provide all the participants with learning experiences, hands-on science demonstrations and pedagogic toolkits. The students will have the opportunity to build up their STEM skills, engage with scientific role models, connect with innovative companies, interact with their sister school across the world, ALL while designing and building with their own sustainable invention.

Who is this program for?

This challenge is open to schools across Belgium and the United States. Each school may invite a group of 10 girls aged 12-15 years old, and a dedicated teacher ready to inspire!

When will it take place?

This is a project throughout the academic year 2020 – 2021. If you’re interested, don’t forget to register here by December 18, 2020 to be considered!

Implemented in phases, it starts with a digital launch event for schools to create their teams and orient to STEM by grabbing their virtual g4g Passport to STEM to step into the shoes of a female inventor in those fields.

Guided by g4g, each team then chooses their theme and begins designing their invention.

Once a prototype is in place, each school is paired with a sister-school for virtual collaboration, with the aim to exchange ideas, asses the invention in several categories (sustainability, creativity, and use of technology among others), and support each other.

Each team is assigned a cross-cultural STEM mentor to provide input, help revise and re-design the inventions.

All teams record a short video on their final prototype invention and the top two winning teams would be identified.

Safety & Privacy

Our virtual meetings will take place on the platform, Zoom. We ensure that private information remains confidential, particularly by utilizing Zoom’s safety functions such as waiting rooms, passwords, authenticated users, in-meeting security controls, control of screen sharing, and control of disabling, blocking, or muting users.

We will be monitoring online safety during the broadcast by having a Safety Officer as part of our dedicated behind-the-scenes team which will monitor unruly chat or be ready to remove anyone that doesn’t belong (using the security controls built into Zoom).
