While many carmakers, such as VW, are already committed to a zero emission electric future for cars to meet EU climate goals, some automotive suppliers and the wider oil and gas industry are proponents of an alternative decarbonisation pathway: synthetic petrol or diesel also known as e-fuels.
The e-fuels industry has been aggressively lobbying for the introduction of fuel credits into the car CO2 standards to allow synthetic fuels to contribute to new car fleet CO2 reductions alongside EVs.
Yet little is known about the air quality impacts of using synthetic fuels in cars, are they really clean as the e-fuels industry claims? Are e-petrol and e-diesel clean burning or are they just another polluting fuel? And what impact will their use have on cleaning up the existing fleets?
