De afvalproblematiek in het kanaal is geen alom gekend probleem. Wanneer je passeert langs het kanaal in het centrum van Brussel, kan je altijd wel vuil zien drijven op het water. Eender welk uur of welke dag. Indien dit afval niet uit het water gehaald wordt komt het uiteindelijk via de Schelde in de Noordzee terecht. Elk jaar stroomt wereldwijd 8 miljoen ton plastic afval via rivieren de oceanen in. Dit is een gigantische stroom afval die nog zeer moeilijk te recupereren is eens ze zich in de oceaan bevindt. Om dit probleem onder de aandacht van de mensen te brengen gaat Canal it up per kayak varen op het kanaal om te vissen naar afval.

En jij mag mee! We varen in groepen van 6 studenten en de tocht duurt telkens 1u. Vergeet je niet warm genoeg aan te kleden!

The waste problem in the canal isn’t known to all. And yet, if you walk by the canal in the city center, you can always see trash floating. Any time of the day, any day of the week. If it’s not fished out, it ends up in the Scheldt and further in the North Sea. Every year 8 million tons of plastic waste worldwide find it's way into the oceans via rivers. This is a huge stream of waste, which is difficult to retreive once it is in the ocean. To raise awareness about this, Canal it Up! goes out on the canal with their kayaks to fish for plastic and you can come with them this time! We kayak in groups of 6 students and the trip takes 1 hour each time. Don't forget to dress warm enough!
