Conceptual Understanding as an Ecosystem: Ideas, Purpose, and Practices
Overview
Conceptual Understanding as an Ecosystem: Ideas, Purpose, and Practice
We commonly speak about conceptual understanding within the teaching and learning context. However, thriving in a learning community requires members to construct and share a conceptual understanding related to philosophy, policy and practices.
Conceptual understanding is the living foundation of every thriving learning organisation. In this dynamic professional learning experience, educators and leaders are invited to explore conceptual understanding not as a static idea, but as an ecosystem: a vibrant interplay of shared language, organisational purpose, professional identity, and daily practice.
Schools flourish when their people make sense of learning in coherent, connected ways. Yet, in many contexts, teams struggle to establish shared meaning around what “high-quality learning,” “effective teaching,” or “powerful collaboration” truly look like. This workshop offers a space to slow down, zoom out, and examine the conceptual roots that sustain and/or challenge collective growth.
Through collaborative inquiry, case studies, and facilitated reflection, participants will uncover how ideas, purpose, and practice feed one another, shaping the culture of a school from within. We will examine how conceptual understanding interacts with intellectual capital, commitment, and competence, and what happens when a learning community aligns its language, aspirations, and structures.
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
- recognise conceptual understanding as an organisational force that influences alignment, coherence, and transformation;
- explore how shared meaning is built, sustained, and enacted across roles and teams;
- identify the conceptual dynamics shaping their own school’s learning ecosystem; and
- generate guiding questions that open pathways for future growth and collaborative innovation.
This in-person event will be held at NAAVU SCHOOL, providing a vibrant setting for collaboration and inspiration.
