About this event

Climate Target, Circular Economy: Implementation of EU Waste Legislation Critical to their Success

Dinner-debate in Brussels, 1 March 2023, 19:00-22:00, at the Residence Palace

The Circular Economy, Circular Bioeconomy and Climate Change Mitigation cannot happen without full, responsible implementation of waste legislation but even today, political will is lacking in numerous Member States. Why is this? How do we release the blockages and why is it important? How does lack of implementation affect the viability of the circular economy, the attraction of investors to invest in much needed waste treatment plants along with the jobs they create, with what effect on the climate?

Four European Associations: FEAD, CEWEP, MWE and EURIC have combined their expertise and come together to organise this event where we will explore these key issues, how they affect us as citizens, politicians, business and their entire value chains, our energy security, and the lack of direct tools at EU level to effectively enforce and support implementation.

The big question today is: How Can We Make EU Waste Legislation More Effective in Practice?

Bring Your experience and opinions to the table on 1 March to debate this key question with our members.

FEAD is the European federation representing the private waste and resource management industry across Europe. FEAD’s members are national waste management associations covering 18 countries across Europe. Our companies play a key role in the transition to a circular economy by producing resources which can be re-injected in the economy and by supplying energy. They add value through innovative and cost-efficient collection, sorting, and recycling of secondary raw materials. In doing so, they play a key role in achieving the best economic and environmental outcomes.

FEAD members represent about 3,000 companies with activities in all forms of waste management. These companies employ over 320,000 people who operate around 2,400 recycling and sorting centres, 1,100 composting sites, 260 waste-to-energy plants and 900 controlled landfills. Our companies have an approximate 60% share in the household waste market and handle more than 75% of industrial and commercial waste in Europe. Their combined annual turnover is approximately € 75 billion.
